The final project for School of Motion’s Design Bootcamp was to board out a :30 second Anthem spot for Premium Beat called “The Perfect Song.” The spot talks about how important music is to the creative video process, how great the Premium Beat experience can be, and is somewhat of an ode to the power of music. This final project was a challenge to apply all of the design knowledge we learned during the course. We were provided with the script and audio.

Process

After reviewing the brief and Premium Beat’s brand, I started brainstorming and mind mapping to come up with some initial visual ideas. I then explored ideas for art directions, and came up with these two Mood Boards.

Mood Board Option #1. This direction was flowy, organic, and focused on the beauty of classical music, instruments, and environments.

Mood Board Option #2. This direction was energetic, rocky, and had a rougher collage style.

I chose the second Mood Board, because I felt it better reflected the rocky music in the audio track for the spot. The cleaner softer style of the first Mood Board didn’t capture the energy of the music or the message. I decided to use Premium Beat’s entire color palette, including red, because red reflected the power and excitement of the fun, upbeat audio.

After writing and sketching out the initial storyboard, I created a Style Frame. My process was entirely digital, though I wanted the cut out paper collage to look analog (using rough, ripped paper edges and grungy textures). However, I intentionally had parts of the design look digital, such as the multiple colorful drop shadows. I liked the combination of digital and analog, and through the process of creating the design boards, realized it could represent digital and analog music recording processes.
